Position Summary

Position Overview:

The Social Media Specialist is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating social media efforts across platforms to promote exhibitions, programs, offerings, and further the vision and mission of the museum. The Social Media Specialist reports directly to the Public Relations Director within the Communications Team.

Principal Responsibilities (Social Media Management Functions):

The Social Media Specialist will work with key stakeholders and teams to:

  • Manage the museum’s social networking sites, build meaningful connections, and increases followers and awareness across platforms to include:
    • Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google My Business, and more.
  • Build social media plans and strategy through research, benchmarking, and audience identification in support of the museum’s goals and objectives.
    • Work closely with PR/Marketing teams to create weekly and monthly content calendars.
    • Collaborate with Marketing Manager on social media plans specific to content for paid advertising.
  • Create, edit, and share daily content, working with creative and digital teams for graphics, video, etc., and all other departments to actively seek interesting stories.
  • Manage social media budget for promoted posts across platforms.

Influencer Relations:

  • Cultivate relationships with social media influencers, develop influencer marketing plans, and oversee influencer events as well as maintain relationships with social ambassadors and share out ongoing information.
  • Maintain Social Media Styleguide and internal policies to convey a consistent voice, tone, and brand integrity for internal ambassadors.
  • Maintain open communication with museum colleagues to stay informed on upcoming events and museum initiatives, shaping the messaging for visitors, the community, and followers.

Insights and Reporting:

  • Monitor trends for social media tools and stay updated on emerging platforms, channels, and technologies.
  • Measure and report the impact of social media programs, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns.
    • Share social media insights on a monthly basis through board report and refine efforts based on results.

Reputation Management:

  • Work with PR Director and Marketing Manager to manage online presence, monitoring content on sites such as Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor, and Facebook.
  • Develop engagement plans to spark return visits, and conversion to member/advocate.
  • Create monthly evaluation reports for online reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Minimum two years in related employment, work experience in public relations, marketing, or communications, and managing social media campaigns.
  • Knowledge of museum operations, the arts industry, and arts marketing is a plus.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use visual storytelling and social listening to create unique and engaging content.
  • Digital savvy professional, open to learning a variety of platforms and applications.
  • Highest ethics as it relates to all aspects of museum practices.
  • Professional integrity and ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion.
  • Methodical project management and execution skills.
  • Ability to interact respectfully, collegially, and professionally.
  • Willingness to be a team player both within the department, throughout the organization, and in the community at large.
  • Occasionally weekend or evening hours may be required.
  • Belief in the museum as a cause for social good and a positive, and dynamic force for economic development.

  • Physical demands: In the work environments described, position requires utilizing a computer and telephone for prolonged periods of time, good eye/hand coordination, verbal and written conversation with others, lifting/carrying (up to 10 lbs), and ability to move around the museum. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision.
  • Work environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum spaces, and in communities served. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
