Vox Media in Washington, DC

Vox Media

Vox Media is the leading independent modern media company. Known for building the best media brands and the technology that enables them, we are committed to building a better future for the industry — and getting the future of media right. Vox Media’s editorial networks include Vox, The Verge, SB Nation, Eater, Polygon, Recode, and Curbed. Our diverse storytelling and advertising businesses include the Concert publisher-led marketplace, the Vox Creative brand studio, the Chorus publishing platform, and the company’s entertainment division Vox Media Studios, which includes the Vox Media Podcast Network and Epic.

The Senior Producer will oversee Vox and Recode’s conversation shows The Ezra Klein Show, Pivot, Recode Decode with Kara Swisher, Recode Media, The Weeds, Worldy, and any other new interview or roundtable shows that we develop.

In this role, the Senior Producer will partner with the editorial director of Vox podcasts, newsroom leadership and show hosts to assess their podcasts’ vision and mission, refresh and strengthen their programming, and implement plans for ongoing improvement and audience growth. The senior producer will work with the show’s producer and audience engineers to make such the show is produced at a high level. The Senior Producer will also be responsible for curating audience metrics and editorial insights and communicating them back to the host in a regular feedback loop

This role would benefit from experience working in broadcast TV or radio, or conversation-based podcasts. Experience overseeing show launches, revamps and high-profile hosts would also be valuable. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment and ability to pivot quickly are also key qualities we’re seeking.

Above all else, we’re looking for someone with their pulse on the next interesting thing in policy, politics, and technology. You should know who our hosts should be talking to, what issues are just about to bubble up in policy and technology circles, and you should care deeply about helping our audience understand complex ideas.

Vox values thinkers, creatives, and obsessives from all backgrounds. We are looking to hire the right person — not the right résumé. We encourage those with diverse and nontraditional experience to apply.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC.

In addition to your resume and cover letter, include:

  • Three guests you think would be perfect for The Ezra Klein Show
  • Three guests you think would be perfect for Recode Decode
  • One topic idea for The Weeds
  • One recommendation for improving The Weeds

What you’ll bring:

  • Experience working and providing feedback to top editorial talent
  • Ability to coach and develop host talent
  • Great editorial judgment and instincts for what the next big conversations will be specifically in the areas of policy and tech
  • A track record of developing show ideas that draw on diverse perspectives/source lists
  • Strong collaborative skills, as well as the ability to delegate and prioritize effectively
  • Great team player that is able to both coach direct reports and work collaboratively across teams and departments (with staff who do not report to you) to produce incredible shows
  • Interest in explanatory journalism, big ideas, and driving conversation
  • Experience successfully growing podcast audience
  • Desire to do things in new and different ways and a hunger to help us define Vox’s explanatory voice in audio through talk and interview shows

What you’ll do:

  • Provide hands on editorial direction on Vox and Recode’s conversation shows The Ezra Klein Show, Pivot, Recode Decode with Kara Swisher, Recode Media, The Weeds, Worldy, and any other new interview or roundtable shows that we develop.
  • Work with hosts to identify the guests and topics that would be valuable to the show
  • Grow our audience in both traditional and experimental ways.
  • Manage budgets for the shows including negotiating studio fees and working with freelancers as needed.
  • Work with producers and audio engineers who cut, mix, master and publish the shows
  • Manage research and booking assistants where applicable
  • Provide final editorial sign-off, ensuring they meet Vox’s high journalistic and creative standards.
  • Collaborate with Vox journalists, show hosts and talent and help them develop their on-air skills.
  • Pitch other talk show ideas when budget and staff resources allow
