How can you make a difference?

must be able to spearhead the strategy, creation, design, and coordination of key social media campaigns and event promotions while integrating new ways of generating online engagement and strengthening the brand. In addition, someone who is able to explore and integrate the latest digital tools and trends and has an in-depth knowledge of paid, unpaid, and earned media, data analytics, SEO and email marketing.

Some of your duties and stakeholders will include:

  • External: Humanitarian & social innovator advocates, Private companies, Tech enthusiasts and media;
  • Internal for UNICEF: Division of Communications, Partnerships offices, National Committees, partner UN agencies;
  • Office of Innovation Team: Identifying new markets and solutions (Futures Team Prototyping & Testing (Ventures Team), Scaling Real Time tools (Scale Team), Director’s Office
  • Dedicated support to Innovation priority projects: Blockchain, Project Connect, Drones, Urbanization, UPSHIFT, U-Report, and accelerate to scale.

Your engagement will be paramount in the following segments:

Global Strategy:

  • Provide strategic advice and digital media plan for priority work areas
  • Develop digital campaign strategies and implementation plans for UNICEF Innovation initiatives
  • Where relevant, develop and strengthen processes and protocols for digital media management and content curation


  • Project management and maintenance of
  • Spearhead as Innovation focal point for Digital governance project on taxonomy
  • Manage relationships with UNICEF digital and social focal points and external vendors and partners as needed
  • Manage a potential intern resource and UNICEF Innovation Fund communication focal point

External relations:

  • Explore new potential non-monetary partnerships (e.g distribution channels, content sharing, tools & platforms) to help strengthen UNICEF Innovation’s digital and social initiatives.
  • Strengthen existing relationships and develop new partnerships with UNICEF’s Division of Communication, UNICEF’s Country Offices, UNICEF National Committees to highlight the role and impact of innovation
  • Work more closely with UNICEF Innovation’s partners on developing, and cross-promoting co-develop content.

Growing New Challenges:

  • Social media, Linkedin and Instagram – diversify storytelling mechanisms and grow audiences


  • Utilize digital and social channels and tools to cover events, trip missions, and for UNICEF Innovation.
  • Produce evergreen multimedia assets that can be used in multiple ways for promotion or visual storytelling.

Content management:

  • Introduce new types of multimedia content
  • Propose and deliver new dynamic content streams (thought series blogs from the team, to Vlog series etc)

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Masters or higher) in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related field. A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in advertising, digital marketing, social media, account management, lead generation, data-driven campaigns, & email marketing.
  • Experience managing multiple social and digital media platforms & managing and executing social media advertising campaigns, globally would be an advantage.
  • Experience in implementing social media strategies for UN System, UNICEF or with non-profit organizations and/or private sector companies would be an asset.
  • Proven copy-editing skills are required.
  • Fluent written and verbal skills in English. Competence in another UN language preferred.

Payment details and further considerations

  • Monthly payment, based on monthly tasks and progress reports, approved upon monthly review with supervisor.
  • Consultant is responsible for his/her own health insurance
  • Consultant is eligible for standard DSA for all work-related travel
  • Duty Station: New York, duration of assignment – 11.5 months
