The Office of Communications at West Virginia University is seeking applicants for a Front-end Web Designer.(Professional Technologist 2.862) Using inventive and bold design techniques, the Front-End Web Designer is responsible for day-to-day creation, production and/or maintenance of several websites and digital products, including but not limited to: WVUToday.wvu.edu; ENews.wvu.edu, Mountaineer E-News, WVU Weekly, Magazine.wvu.edu and emails from the University president. In addition to the overall design and development of these products, the incumbent is responsible for research, development and implementation of the latest digital technologies, including responsive design, flexible grid systems and progressive enhancement techniques, and development of methodology for designing websites.
In order to be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will:
  • Coordinate all “production” or “output” of UR/Office of Communications digital products, including but not limited to websites, HTML newsletters and media management systems.
  • As directed by the director of news, post news releases and stories to appropriate sites (WVUToday, E-News, WVU Magazine, etc.) utilizing inventive design within the overall structure of the particular platform.
  • Make recommendations about how individual releases/stories may be displayed to get the most attention/readership.
  • Develop HTML email templates for delivery systems like Blackbaud, MailChimp, etc.
    Once content has been developed, helps produce various HTML emails for distribution internally and externally (e.g. WVUToday, WVUWeekly, presidential communication, etc.).
  • Follow WVU branding guidelines in managing all platforms.
  • Work with colleagues in UR/Digital to stay abreast of trends in digital communication.
  • Ensure that UR/Office of Communications products comply with federal accessibility requirements.
  • Understand various content management systems to troubleshoot problems, provide conceptual guidance and provide feedback on development and improvement of current content management system.
  • Understand audience needs, user actions and information architecture for each platform.
  • Assist in maintaining a consistent positive image of the University on the digital products under his/her purview.
  • Analyze traffic and/or usage of various WVU posts/news stories on a variety of web platforms.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Graphic Design or related field.
  • Two (2) years experience in each of the following:
    • working on web design
    • using designs in content management systems and HTML
    • creating HTML e-mails and email templates
    • responsive CSS and HTML5 markup
    • responsive design and accessibility
